Nested Ecosystems Symbiosis

Frederick Bunbury started as a Postdoctoral researcher in Arthur Grossman and Devaki Bhaya’s lab in 2019 to study the microbial communities found in the hot springs of Yellowstone National Park. Prior to this, he did my undergraduate studies in Plant Biology at Cambridge University and continued with a PhD in Alison Smith’s lab, where he focused on mutualistic interactions between algae and bacteria centered around the exchange of vitamin B12. He is currently working on better understanding how Cyanobacteria and Chloroflexi found in hot spring mats interact physically, move cooperatively and build biofilm structure, as well as how they interact chemically through nutrient exchange.
