Atmospheric Science & Energy

Liang Xu  is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Zakem's lab. His research lies in the field of microbial ecology and biogeochemistry. His work is focused on how the diverse communities of microorganisms that consume nonliving organic matter impact the carbon cycle at large scales. He develops theories and computational modelling to understand how microheterotrophic ecological interactions give rise to observed community composition and nutrient cycling, which includes exploring the factors maintaining the diversity of free-living microheterotrophic functional types, the controls on the spectrum of organic carbon turnover rates, and understanding the observations that show different oceanographic patterns of diverse heterotrophic microorganisms.
