Ecology

Perry McCarty’s academic training was in Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science and he spent his career as a software engineer in the Bay Area, living with his family in Redwood City since 1988. He retired in 2015 and became interested in learning more about the plants he was seeing while enjoying hiking in the hills. He took the docent training program with Friends of Edgewood, a volunteer group dedicated to preservation, education, and restoration at Edgewood Preserve and has been involved in many of their projects.  He then took the Jasper Ridge docent training program in 2020 and is becoming active in projects there, as well. Professor Jeff Dukes will be joining Carnegie in May and his student, Andrea Nebhut, is working on a project that will use seeds collected from Jasper Ridge. Perry has experience in seed collection from a restoration project at Edgewood and will be collecting seeds for Andrea to work with when she arrives.
